Surf Shack Arch W/walls Each |
Cowabunga is a slang
word from the 1960s surfer culture, used as an expression of exhilaration when
riding the waves.
Have Surfer-inspired fun. Beachcomber tank tops, shirts, shorts, wet
suites, swimsuits, bikinis, sandals,
beachcomber hats,
surfer dude wigs and a laid-back attitude make for excellent fun,
whether or not you can hang ten. |
The key to pulling off a coordinated
event: Evoke your theme throughout the affair. Whether that theme is as
general as a season or a feeling, or as specific as a special flower, it should be the subtle thread that ties
everything together. Your location, invitations, flowers, menu,
cake, and favors should all cleverly reflect one common concept.
Then, get as creative as you can!
Never underestimate the power of music to set the tone for
your party. Dig out the old '60s surf band albums. You'll
almost feel the warm ocean breeze if the sounds of the Beach
Boys, Jan and Dean, The Ventures, Dick Dale, and The Safaris
are filling your backyard. Make sure to play some of the
great car songs too. Have a nostalgic surf party by hiring an authentic Beach Boys band.
Have a showing of one of the old
Beach Party Movies with Annette & Frankie like: "Beach Party", "Beach
Blanket Bingo", "Muscle Beach Party", or "How to Stuff a
Wild Bikini". Or use a Surfer movie like "Ride the
Wild Surf" with Fabian & Tab Hunter. For a teen girls party use "Gidget"
with Sandra Dee & James Darren. Who can forget Gidget, Moondoggie & the
Big Kahoona. If you have a big screen TV, play a Surfer Movie in the
background to create atmosphere.
The Invitations:

Surf Boards |
Announce your event on
bright Mango orange paper. This colorful card is perfect for any number
of occasions. Comes with Cream envelopes.
OR
Cut out surfboard shapes
from colorful card stock and write the details for the party on them.
Attach the cards to inexpensive
beachcomber hats and hand deliver them to your guests. Say something
like: |
Cowabunga, Surf’s up!
Grab your wet suits and boards,
Pull on your sandals,
And don your beachcomer shorts & shirts;
Throw on this beachcomer hat
The Big Kahoona says,
Get here by any means dude!
We're throwin' a Beachcomer Bash!
Complete with all the fixin's;
We hope you can make it -
It'll be a fun Ride on the Wild Surf!

Time:
Location:
When sending out your invitations, make a note that there will be a
Beachcomer dress code: Beachcomer tank tops, shirts, shorts, wet suites,
swimsuits, bikinis, sandals etc.
The Decorations:
This is the perfect party to
hold on the beach or outside around the pool. Gather up your surfboards
and you'll be ready to party.
Remember your tables provide
a very large surface area and covering them with themed or colorful
tablecover is the fastest way to change the look and feel of your party
area. Add place settings using a combination of themed and
solid colored
tableware for a designer look.
Tuck a napkin into a
pair of
sunglasses, great table accent and a fun favor.
If you don't have a beach or
pool, create a true beachcomer atmosphere with fun props.
Transform a room into a
large beach scene using a photo mural, standees, and scene setters. They
make an excellent photo background.
Make your own
balloon palm trees.
A blue tarp placed on the
ground (water) with a folded up ironing board (surfboard) makes a great
backdrop for souvenir photos. You can drape blue crepe paper strips up
behind the ironing board to look like guests are actually caught in a
wave. Make sure you fold the ironing board up so it lays flat and no one
gets hurt. If your ironing board is not that pretty, drape a towel or
sheet over it and tuck the edges under.
Enlarge surfer pictures, glue onto poster board and set around your
party area.
For additional decorations,
favors and tableware go to the Luau, Tropical,
and Hawaiian Party Section
Surfer Party Activities:
Build Sandcastles
If you're fortunate
to have access to the beach, this activity is for you!
Divide your guests into teams and see which group can
build the best castle. If your not near the beach try
one of the following ideas: filling a couple kiddie
pools with sand or lay a sheet of poly vinyl out in your
lawn. Bring in a truckload of inexpensive sand and have
lots of beach toys ready for a sand castle building
contest.
Beach Volley Ball -
Old time favorite, great
for your beach theme party, hang up your net and have a
game of beach volley ball using
Inflatable Beach Balls
. |
|
Play tried-and-true pool
games like Marco Polo, Tug of War, water volleyball, and water
basketball
Play volleyball using two sheets and water Balloons. Each team member
holds a side of a large sheet. Each team tries to lob the water balloon
over the net to the other side. The other team tries to catch the
balloon using their sheet and without getting wet! This game is great
for older kids and teens!
Garden-hose limbo, a hula hoop contest, or beach blanket bingo are
activities that have provided laughs for decades and are still great
ideas for this theme party!
After dark, settle the crowd down with a bonfire and a sing-along.
The Food & Beverages:
Serve "easy to prepare"
summer fun beach food. Grill hot dogs and hamburgers or go a little bit
more festive with crab legs and melted butter! Add some cole slaw, baked
beans, potato salad, corn on the cob, fruit kabobs or a watermelon bowl
filled with the season's freshest fruit, and lots of munchies. Large Pails And Shovels
make terrific serving buckets.
For dessert, serve frozen bananas on a stick dipped in chocolate, snow
cones, and a delightful summer berry "fruit pizza".
If the party is for kids, serve their food in individual beach pails.
Use a paint pen to write each child's name on a bucket, and fill each
pail with a juice box, wrapped hot dog, goldfish crackers, fruit kabob
and a beach ball! They will never forget the "best ever" backyard party
hosted by your family!
Fill a
wheelbarrow, or metal tub with ice and
load it with plenty of soda and bottles of water. Sip down your cool
summer beverages in
Hurricane Glasses or
Coconut Cups
. Use with cool drink mixes like:
Pineapple Passion Fizz or Pina Colada Mix. As an alternative, offer your guests
daiquiris and fruit smoothies - complete with mini umbrellas.
Don't forget to stock up on lots of ice - plan on approximately 1 pound
per adult guest for the party!
Have
wooden pineapple bowls sitting around with individually wrapped
Life-Savers™ candy for those sudden sugar attacks!
Finish the night off with a "Surf Board Cake" - it's sure to float you
right to the top for creativity! Don't forget to serve this
one up with a mound of refreshing ice cream!
Make cupcakes and add
surfboard picks (available at craft stores) to each cupcake.
